How to See Traffic Exchange Visits in Google Analytics 4 (GA4)

Once your website is in a traffic exchange, the first thing most people want to do is see the visits arrive. This guide shows where RankBoostUp visits appear in Google Analytics 4, how they’re labelled, and what to check if you can’t find them.

Quick check: open GA4, go to Reports → Realtime, and keep your RankBoostUp website active. Visits appear within a minute or two. For a clean breakdown later, add UTM parameters to the URL you enter in RankBoostUp.

1. Watch visits arrive in Realtime

  1. In GA4, open Reports → Realtime.
  2. Make sure your website is set to Active in your RankBoostUp dashboard and your balance has minutes.
  3. Within a minute or two you should see active users, the pages they’re on, and their countries.

Realtime only covers the last 30 minutes. For anything older, use the standard reports below.

2. Find out how the visits are labelled

How GA4 classifies a visit depends on the traffic source you set for your website in RankBoostUp:

Your RankBoostUp settingWhere it usually shows in GA4
No custom traffic sourceDirect
Traffic source: GoogleOrganic Search (google / organic)
Organic keywordOrganic Search (google / organic). GA4 never shows the search term for Google organic visits, so the keyword itself won’t appear.
Traffic source: Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, YouTubeOrganic Social, or Referral, depending on the site
Any other source URLReferral, from that site

Custom traffic sources, organic keywords and mobile traffic are Premium features. With a custom source set, each visit first opens the source page and then clicks through to your site, which is how GA4 learns where it came from.

3. Check the Traffic acquisition report

  1. Open Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition.
  2. Change the table’s primary dimension to Session source / medium.
  3. Set the date range to cover the days your website was active.

4. Tag the visits with UTM parameters

The cleanest way to separate exchange visits from everything else is to tag them. When you add your website in RankBoostUp, enter your URL with UTM parameters, for example:

https://example.com/?utm_source=rankboostup&utm_medium=traffic-exchange

Every visit then lands on the tagged URL, and GA4 groups them under rankboostup / traffic-exchange in the Traffic acquisition report, so you can include or exclude them in one click.

5. Check countries and devices

  • Countries: Reports → User → User attributes → Demographic details, then choose Country. Useful for checking geo-targeted traffic.
  • Devices: Reports → User → Tech → Tech details, then choose Device category. Useful if you’ve turned on mobile traffic.
  • Engagement: average engagement time reflects the visit length you set; pages per session goes up when your bounce rate setting has visitors clicking through to a second page.

Not seeing any visits?

  • Is the GA4 tag on that exact page? Open the URL you entered in RankBoostUp and check it with Google Tag Assistant.
  • Is the website active, with minutes in your balance? Paused websites and empty balances don’t receive visits.
  • Is your targeting very narrow? A single small country delivers slowly. Add countries or remove the restriction to test.
  • Are you filtering traffic? GA4 data filters or a consent banner that blocks analytics until someone clicks Accept can hide visits.
  • Did the URL redirect? If your page redirects (for example http to https, or to a login page), make sure the final page carries your GA4 tag.
